gunnercup: The champions have been crowned

July 16, 2018

After four weeks of scintillating football over in Russia, we finally have a winner!

France toppled Croatia 4-2 to lift the trophy for just the second time in their history. As far as World Cup finals go, it’s fair to say the entertainment value matched the tournament as a whole. We had fantastic finishing, own goals, dodgy VAR decisions and a goalkeeping blunder for the ages – what more can you ask for?

Mbappé, 19, became the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since the great Pelé did the same in Sweden, 1958. With Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar all out by the semi-finals, it’s clear we have another genuine superstar on our hands.

We’d also like to give credit to Gareth Southgate, golden boot winner Harry Kane and the entire England team for a fantastic campaign that just fell short. We’ll be ready for the Euros in two years time, that’s for sure.

An eye to the future

As for the rest of the summer, well, what are we going to do without any football or tennis on the TV? Time to dive into that book that’s been sitting on your shelf for a while now!

We’ll also be counting down to this year’s Symposium over the coming weeks so keep your eyes peeled for that…
